IP August Update

Hi Everyone,

Happy Labor Day Weekend! I hope you’re all enjoying the festivities.

Conventions are over, campaigns are heating up, and it’s time to gear up for November 3!

Mark Your Calendars:

Next IP meeting is Sunday September 13 at 3 pm on Zoom.

 More information to follow.

There are on-going issues: campaigning, voting issues, the USPS, so here’s a recap.

The USPS still needs our help. Your continued calls and letters will remind our elected officials that we haven’t forgotten that DeJoy needs to roll back the changes he’s made. The information sent you in the July Update is on the IP Website.

For those of you who have friends and relatives in states with Republican Senators, please encourage them to contact these officials. The House passed a bill to secure the USPS weeks ago; it’s now languishing on Mitch McConnell’s desk and Republican pressure is needed to bring it to a vote.

Voting issues continue and need our attention. The voting rules for NY are beginning to stabilize, but there are two outstanding issues: Will there be secure ballot drop boxes in Westchester? and Will we be able to track receipt and tabulation of our mail-in ballots on-line?

I will be sending along additional information as I receive it, but for now here are important dates to remember:

Last Date for Voter Registration: This must be done 25 days prior to the election; by my count that is October 9, 2020. Registration forms can be downloaded at:

-- https://citizenparticipation.westchestergov.com/images/stories/pdfs/voterregeng.pdf (English)

-- https://citizenparticipation.westchestergov.com/images/stories/pdfs/voterregspan.pdf (Spanish)

Dates to Request an Absentee Ballot: You can request them now and until October 27, 2020. The request can be

--by mail or in person (25 Quarropas Street, White Plains, NY 10601),

--by email (BOE-WestAbsentee@westchestergov.com),

--by FAX ( (914) 995-7753 or (914) 995-3190),

--by phone ((914) 995-5285 or (914)995-5291),

--or electronically through the NYS Absentee Ballot Portal (https://absenteeballot.elections.ny.gov/)

First Day of Early Voting: Saturday, October 24, 2020 at any of the 17 County Election Sites.

General Election Day: Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at your assigned polling place.

Campaign calendar

I continue to need your help on this. Please let me know of events for candidates of local interest. They are:

Mondaire Jones – running for Nita’s seat.

Pete Harckham for State Senate running against Rob Astorino -  need I say more?

Tom Abinanti for State Assembly – does anyone know if he has opponents?

Mimi Rocah for County District Attorney – same for Mimi

And there are some NJ candidates we worked for in 2018 whose events I’m also listing

September

9/12       Senator Pete Harckham Food Drive; 11 am – 1 pm, United Methodist Church, 70 Bedford Rd, Pleasantville (flyer below)

9/16       Senator Pete Harckham Birthday Fundraiser on Zoom (flyer below)

9/8 and almost every evening, phone banks for Mikie Sherrill, a candidate in NJ whom IP supported in ’18 and is running for reelection.

Surely there are more events. Let me know about them so I can add them to the IP website calendar before the next update.

Pete Harckham yard signs are beginning to show up. If interested in having one, please check with his campaign.

Looking forward to seeing you at our September 13 meeting.

‘Til then, stay safe and wear your mask.
